What’s New: The Latest Homeware Items That Everyone Wants To Own

This post feels like a bit of a continuation of my 2022 trends post, but I am going to drill down a bit more into new interior brands, looks, and homeware items that are proving to be very desirable in 2022 (and are swiftly gaining popularity with designers and interior influencers across social media.) A lot of these pieces feel quite unique; with an explicit return to vintage-inspired styles and designs that are brought up-to-date by being enamelled in bold colours.

Wallpaper by artists

Artisan wallpaper is going to be big in 2022, with the most popular motifs containing block prints, stripes, florals, waves and squiggles. Designed by artists, these wallpapers offer unique and distinctive patterns (although do expect to pay over £130 per roll). There are three artisan wallpaper brands that currently stand out from the crowd: Common Room (who I first discovered at Decorex last year), Ottoline (who have existed since 2015, but whose designs are currently all over Pinterest), and the new wallpaper brand Dado Atelier (who employ fashion designers, fine artists, and printmakers to work alongside their in-house team).

Bobbin interiors

A nod to crafts and vintage style, this embellished 17th Century decorative feature is popping up everywhere. It looks particularly good on picture or mirror frames and lamp bases painted in spirited colours.

Wavy candlesticks and printed squiggles

Ever since some wavy candlesticks were photographed perched on Eyeswoon’s mantel (designed with a blacksmith by Maud Vaughan - you can buy the same pair here), squiggle candlesticks have become a ‘must-have’ item. As I mentioned in my trends post, ric rac waves will overtake the scallop as the shape du jour this year, so expect to see a lot more rippled homeware going forward.

Kitchen skirts

The country farmhouse kitchen skirt is back in style. While they might be a bit twee for some, their return is ultimately a good thing because they are a brilliant budget solution that solves practical decor problems. Need to cover an ugly freestanding washing machine? Got a broken kitchen door that can’t be replaced? Get yourself a kitchen skirt! All you need is some pretty fabric hemmed at both ends and a tension rod or net curtain wire to hang it on. If you don’t fancy making one yourself, take your measurements to a local seamstress who will be able to knock you one up easily.

Checked tableware

Tablescaping (where you ‘dress’ a table to look its best for a meal) has been a huge trend during lockdown and shows no sign of waning (even though we can now go out to a restaurant again - hurrah!). Checked/gingham tablecloths and napkins are the most lusted after base for 2022 tablescapes and if you are quick, Mango has a great tablecloth and napkin set reduced to less than half price in their January sale.

Travertine tables

While most of the items I’ve featured so far in this post are very colourful and artisan, the modern, neutral home still remains incredibly popular. The most wanted item to complete these serene schemes in 2022 is a travertine table to plonk in front of the boucle sofa. The good news is that there are a load of these available from the ’80s to purchase second hand on eBay or FB Marketplace (if you are strong enough to pick it up and load it into the car). If you want to buy new, Ferm Living currently does a great version.

Pressed flowers and botanical prints

Another trend that has returned and you can craft yourself (or source second hand) are pressed flowers and framed botanical prints. When a flower is at its peak, carefully place it between two sheets of baking paper in the middle of a heavy book and leave it in a cool, dry place for two/three weeks. Once dry, carefully remove it with tweezers and frame it in a clear glass frame. Alternatively, buy pressed flowers and botanicals via Jam Jar Edit - an offshoot of the London creative floral studio Jam Jar Flowers.

Ruffles

Ruffled-edge cushions, bedding, and pillowcases are a key look for 2022. For ruffles containing checks, colour, and Liberty-print patterns, head over to Poppy & Honesty who have been hand-making these in Cornwall since 2015. If you like the look but want it plain and neutral, Dunelm are selling some lovely ruffle-edges pillowcases in pure white for £10 each.

Bolster cushions

Say goodbye to the simple square cushion in favour of the bolster. These look great on accent chairs and on beds placed in front of pillows.

Fluted Bell Lights

I’m seeing a lot of little fluted bell lights being used over sinks in both kitchens and bathrooms - they add a real delicate touch as they don’t feel overly ‘statement’ and aren’t too overpowering (preferring to just catch the eye and look pretty). For inspiration, watch this reel by interiors influencer Kerry Lockwood who has just overhauled the bathroom in her new house with a lovely dainty bell light over the Burlington marble sink.
