Illuminate Your Home With Sustainable Boho Bamboo Pendant Lighting From Lanna Passa
Ten years ago, I never even used to consider how my homeware was made, what it was made from and the impact my purchase had on the planet. If I saw a cute cushion or picked out a paint colour, its allure was all I contemplated before buying it. Fast forward to today and I am more likely to be enticed into purchasing a piece of furniture or decor for my home if it is both attractive and sustainable in structure, being supplied by retailers with genuine ethical credentials and eco-friendly intentions. I’m not alone; according to recent consumer trends, most of us now want to buy items for our home that are part of the circular economy, with sustainable manufacturing methods that give back to local communities.
There has definitely been a shift in our purchasing habits and the attraction of mass-produced interiors and ‘fast furniture’ is at an all-time low. Instead, we are seeing the use of more artisan pieces, natural materials and earthy textures increase within modern, popular interior design schemes, as designers lean towards a more organic style of decorating. This has led to a resurgence in the popularity of traditionally ‘boho-in-style’ furniture and homeware, constructed out of organic and renewable materials like bamboo, rattan, wicker, water hyacinth and seagrass.
One brand that has stood out to me recently for creating both beautiful and sustainable homeware that is the perfect balance between modern and classic boho vintage style is Lanna Passa. This small, family-run business based in Thailand creates unique, characterful, handcrafted homeware that gives back to local Thai Hill tribes and artisan communities.
Selling a wide range of conservational textile and vintage crafts, Lanna Passa supports the centuries-old local traditions of hand weaving, organic cotton and hemp growth and indigo plant dying by practising these methods to create each bespoke piece. However, it is their distinctive bamboo canopy-style pendant lights that they are most well known for and what caught my eye the most when I first discovered the brand.
Using traditional local craftsmanship, Lanna Passa first developed its range of bamboo pendant lighting by repurposing an intricately hand-woven fishing trap basket. Using strips of locally sourced bamboo (a strong, fast-growing plant that is self-sufficient as it doesn’t rely on good quality soil or regular watering), they evolved the pendants to now offer a wide range of shapes and sizes, from tall and slender, to conical or circular clusters that look amazing mixed and matched and hung grouped in an airy conservatory or dropped low as a single feature over a dining table.
Full of natural texture, the gaps between each bamboo strip filter light from the bulb and keep the shade feeling light and airy within a space, meaning that you can size up to make a statement without the shade feeling bulky within a room. This makes these pendant lights great to use to soften a bedroom scheme or to dress up a plain, narrow hallway with visual and tactile interest.
While the natural-coloured lights work perfectly with other organic shades like sandy tones, seashore whites and organic greens, the black or two-tone dipped pendants would suit a more maximalist interior. A cluster of the pink or yellow Dipped Pendant Lights would also work within livelier interior schemes including textured wallpapers or animal prints.
My personal favourite has to be the Rustic Handwoven Seagrass Pendant Light; the hanging threads providing a loose, casual structure that feels both soothing and harmonious. This design would work perfectly in a beach house or as part of the decor in a coastal home.
Lanna Passa’s pendants come with the option of a hardwired fitting, or as a plug-in swag version that can simply be plugged into a wall socket. You can also purchase the shades as a simple decoration which can be hung with wire or twine from the ceiling. Combining and grouping a number of these shades from the roof of a marquee or a pergola is a great way to decorate a wedding venue or an outdoor event space; you can add extra atmosphere by combining the natural bamboo shades with twinkling fairy lights.
