Six Improvements That You Can Make To Your Garden

Now that summer is in full swing, I’ve been looking at the improvements that I have made and that I want to make to elevate my garden to look the best it can be, as well as make the most of the space and create an area that I want to spend a lot of time in. Some of these improvements have been investments, while others are budget-friendly (but take some time and effort).

While maintenance is key for any garden (trimming back bushes and trees, painting decking and power washing furniture are all yearly essentials), if you plan some backyard renovation, consider the following ideas to enhance and improve your outside space. If you are also considering renovating your home at the same time, consider installing some folding patio doors so that you can admire your garden improvements and make the most out of them all year round.

Install a covered pergola

One of the best decisions that I ever made for my garden was to install a non-rust, aluminium pergola with a roof. This provides us with a protected outdoor area that can be used during heavy rainfall, while it also supplies us with a shaded space if we require it by simply turning the roof slats.

Add stylish garden lighting

This is on my garden hit list; I really want to install new garden lighting as in recent years, there has been an increase in the design of stylish, yet functional, garden lighting that can be used to brighten outdoor areas for both task and atmosphere. Backyard lighting is functionally important so that you can see areas of your garden at night (like path edges and the bins), but it can also be used to elevate your garden aesthetic in the evening by highlighting certain trees, or just by creating a soft, warm garden glow.

Style up your shed

If your shed is full of old junk and rubbish and feels cluttered and ugly, take it all out, give it a good clean and create a stylish shed instead that you will want to spend time in. Add in a potting table, erect lots of open shelving and install hooks so that you decorate it with vintage watering cans and rustic flower pots. Woven baskets are also great for storing those not-so-attractive (but necessary) gardening items!

Beef up your borders

If your garden borders are patchy or there are a few plants that need replacing, invest in some new plants to create a riot of colour in your garden. Make sure you pay attention to height by adding tall plants like Verbena at the back, then lower, fuller plants like dahlias at the front for good filling and order arrangement.

Paint a mural

If you have a plain wall or fence that is doing nothing for your garden, how about adding some colour via a mural? At this year’s RHS Hampton Court Flower Show, the Lion King Garden featured a vivid red, yellow and orange backdrop for a striking effect.

Paint it black

If a mural is too way out for you, try painting your fences or walls jet black. Green looks amazing in front of a dark backdrop and the look is modern and stylish.
