The New HAY Design Spring 2022 Collection

Danish interiors brand HAY have been one of my favourite design companies for a long time. Alongside their offerings of modern furniture and lighting, they take everyday objects such as toothbrushes and staplers and configure them into beautiful objects that you want on display (rather than just owning for functionality). As they have just released a number of new pieces of spring (including new garden furniture), I thought I would pick out a few of the key items for one of my ‘Spotlight On’ features.

First up, let’s look at their new offerings in home storage. HAY were the first to design and sell the popular plastic coloured crates that you can now find offshoot versions of on the high street (Primark Home are currently selling reproductions). This season, they have launched a range of FSC-certified, thick cardboard storage boxes in colourful, glossy finishes. Available in circular and rectangle shapes, they are great to organise your ‘work from home’ desk without having to opt for basic-looking filing systems or ‘officey’ stationery storage.

If you are looking for something decorative to store items in softer rooms (such as the bedroom), then the Maxim Stripe Boxes - handmade from recycled plastic strips - have that very on-trend English arts & crafts look about them thanks to the woven design.

Portable lamps continue to increase in popularity within home decor and after the success of the PC Portable, HAY has issued two new designs for spring 2022: Apollo and Pao.

Designed by STUDIO 0405 for HAY, the Apollo portable lamp is handmade using a single piece of opal glass (the light source and rechargeable battery are concealed within the shade). The Apollo is currently only available in white, so if you’d prefer a hit of colour, the mushroom-shaped portable Pao (designed by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa and named after the soft, glowing shape of traditional Mongolian Pao tents) comes in a striking pillar box red.

One of the great things about portable lamps is that they can be used outside on the garden table as there is no requirement for a power supply; if you do require a new balcony table and chair set this summer, then there are new exterior lounge chairs and benches designed for HAY by the Bouroullec brothers (alongside an extension of their popular Palissade collection which gets wavy and modular for 2022).

Allowing a multitude of layouts, the new Palissade Park benches can be arranged around the base of a tree, or spiralled along a pathway, allowing this powder-coated steel seating range to feel more traditional than the distinctly modern character of the initial Palissade collection.

For interior furniture, the Slit side tables are now being offered in wood, there is a selection of colour-blocked handwoven kelim rugs designed by Ethan Cook, plus there is the the very cool Korpus shelf - a wall-mounted design with hooks, made from sheet aluminium and available in a range of sizes and colours (I adore the baby blue shade).

Finally, there are the new kitchen accessories. A Sowden Juicer is a new addition to the complement existing colourful kettle and toaster from the range, while two-tone chopping boards and a multi-shade Fresh Press Brewer would captivate the eye and elevate even the most basic kitchen worktop.
