The Best New Warm Paint Colours For Autumn/Winter 2022

Caravan 453, a colour revived from the Paint & Paper Library archive for 2022.

The sudden turn in the weather to short grey rainy days means that the change of season is now upon us. If you are planning on redecorating, these new paint colours (all have recently launched or been revived from the archives in the past few months) have that cosy autumnal feel, facilitating you curling up at home this winter with a scented candle and a good book.

Jaipur Pink 416 (walls) and Kasbah 352 (ceiling and skirting), colours revived from the Paint & Paper Library archive for 2022.

Comfortable and cosy winter colours don’t have to be dark, inky or jewel tones. Instead, I’m rather drawn to the new range of red, orange, pink, brown, plum and taupe shades that have recently been released. Anything that has an earthy base note will feel warm and inviting, so if you prefer lighter tones to dusky hues or bold pigments, pick lighter colours or neutrals that have undertones of red, brown, or orange. Excellent new shades to embrace include the dusky brown-based pink of Mink 297 from Paint & Paper Library or the shadowy tones of Lulling or Cass by Atelier Ellis.

Cass- a warm neutral tone from the new Waving & Smiling colour palette by Atelier Ellis.

I recently wrote about the rise in popularity of warm reds, brick and paprika shades, and the images from that blog post are currently some of my most popular pins on Pinterest, so these colours are definitely having a ‘moment’ within interior design. Deep hues of burgundy and claret work well on kitchen cabinets and can be paired with earthy pinks or brown-based greys to make them less dominating.

Personally, I am a huge fan of the rich plummy brown hues that are being offered for late 2022 / early 2023. Benjamin Moore’s 2023 colour palette includes Wenge: a deep chocolate hue with hints of brown and violet in its undertone; while Mchanga 337 by Paint & Paper Library has a deep red-earth base within its chocolate mix.

If you are after warm tones that are less subtle and really pack a punch, look no further than The Long Room: a sophisticated, characterful rich burnt orange with a deep base that is new from Paint & Paint Library. The Long Room works wonderfully with pink or creamy off-whites, while Cinnamon from Benjamin Moore - part of their Trends 2023 palette - contains subtle brown undertones laced with orange. For a more coral-toned orange, try Spring Puffin - a new shade for 2023 from Fenwick & Tilbrook.

Roben’s Honour 344 (units) and The Long Room 457 (walls), both Paint & Paper Library.
